OUR NATIONAL EMERGENCY

Dear Friends,

One of the primary responsibilities of the federal government is to protect and defend the borders of the United States. Maintaining this defense is a responsibility that Congress and presidents on both sides of the aisle have refused to make a priority, allowing the dangerous situation on our southern border to grow worse by the day.

It wasn't President Trump that said, “We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, and unchecked, circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently, and lawfully to become immigrants in this country,” It was President Obama. The border issue is not merely an immigration issue; it is also an issue of national security.

In addition to the thousands of individuals attempting to enter our country illegally every day, it is also a primary entry point for drugs, human trafficking, dangerous criminals, and gang members entering our country. It is time to resolve this issue once and for all.

While I find it disheartening that the Democrats in Congress gave the president no choice, with their refusal to work with him on a solution to secure the border, I am proud that President Trump was willing to use the tools provided to him under the national emergency statutes. These tools have been used frequently by past presidents to deal with numerous challenges to our national security and will be used to secure our border once and for all. National emergencies take many forms, and the current situation at our southern border certainly fits the bill. Respectfully Yours, Michele Fiore, City of Las Vegas Councilwoman and RNC Committeewoman
